Description
The GEL-Cumulus 18 shoe features our Rearfoot and forefoot gel cushioning system for strike-specific shock attenuation to create smoother transitions. The FluidRide midsole technology provides neutral runners with enhanced comfort and a spring-loaded ride when running longer distances. In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company (Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," which, when translated, expresses the ancient ideal of "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body." Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness. Today, ASICS offers a full line of performance-driven athletic shoes and technical active sports apparel and accessories dedicated to bringing harmony to the body and soul.

This is my first pair of Cumulus. I usually use the GT-2000 series (2nd gen being my favorite) as my daily go-to stability shoe. The weight of the Cumulus is comparable to the GT-2000 and a bit lighter than the Kayano. I've really enjoyed the 300+ miles that I've put on the Cumulus 18's and may get another pair before they are gone from the market altogether.PROS:Super cushy but still controlled. Heel outsole feels a little softer than the GT-2000 2.Not as clunky feeling as GT-2000 2.Heel counter support is good but feels a little looser than GT-2000 or Kayano (which makes sense as the Cumulus 18 is marketed as more as a neutral vs. support shoe but I would argue it's biased towards support).Good durability - contrary to some other reviewers, with ~350 mostly pavement miles on these shoes the highest wear tread areas are just now starting to become even with the softer foam (see pic). All other areas of the shoe are holding up very well. I don't wash my shoes which helps with durability - I'm slightly crazy about getting them off quickly after a run and letting them ventilate so stink not really a problem. The White colorway is quite attractive and different from the bright/neon colorways popular now. That said, white shows dirt very easily.CONS:Heavier than most neutral shoes and ultra-cushioned shoes like Hoka.If you're not a heel-striker, a lot of the cushioned comfort won't be evident.Like most ASICS, you may want to size up 1/2 size, especially for runners due to foot swell. Or for those of us who like our toes to roam free.Kinda tall-ish looking - definitely not sleek like a low/no-drop minimalist shoe (Heel Height: 23mm. Forefoot Height: 13mm. = 10mm. drop)Tread could be more aggressive like GT-2000 and Kayano. I don't feel super confident in the wet or mixed trail terrain on these.
